May 7, 2005 23:55 - Review of American Express Blue Cash

As of 8th May 2005, the American Express Blue Cash will change its rebate formula. Previously, you would need to get past a certain annual expenditure and carry a balance to earn maximum rebates. The new formula does not require you to carry a balance to earn maximum rebates. The old and new formulas are shown in the table below.

Old Rebate Formula
Annual Spending Rebate % - Everyday Purchase Rebate % - Other Purchases
Up to $2,000
0.50%
0.25%
$2,001 to $6,000
1.00%
0.50%
$6,001 to $50,000
3.00%
1.50%
Bonus % if you carry a balance
2.00%
0.50%

New Rebate Formula
Annual Spending Rebate % - Everyday Purchase Rebate % - Other Purchases
Up to $6,500
1.00%
0.50%
$6,501 to $60,000
5.00%
1.50%

By not requiring cardholders to carry a balance to earn "maximum rebates", American Express becomes the first major tiered cash rebate issuer to relax this criteria. This will please existing holders who do not carry a balance and attract more potential applications.

We have written an updated review of the American Express Blue Cash to reflect these rebate changes and have awarded this card Editor's Choice status. (Read Article)
